ecotio2® How do photocatalysts work?

Photocatalysis  –  a chemical reaction, which is accelerated by light.

A photocatalyst is a substance that brings about a chemical reaction, without being involved in it. A photocatalytic coating contains photocatalysts as ingredients. These absorb light and in doing so catalyse a reaction. It is similar to Photosynthesis in plants where light energy is transformed into chemical energy from which plants generate carbohydrates and oxygen from absorbed carbon dioxide, water, and light energy.

Photosynthesis-02

Process of converting energy (sunlight) into Oxygen (O2) and Sugar. Photosynthesis requires Carbon Dioxide (CO2 + Water (H20).

Photocatalysis is the complete cycle of converting light energy (from the sun or an electrical light source) into a chemical energy that’s transferred to water vapour to produce active oxygen species at the surface.

A photocatalyst coating is energised by the presence of light. The excitation of the photocatalyst causes a number of reactions at the surface of the coating. This light stimulation of the Photocatalyst transforms the properties of the coated surface, creating air purification and self-cleaning properties. Photocatalyst Coatings are transparent and designed for a wide variety of everyday surfaces. The active ingredient, titanium dioxide doesn’t dissolve in water and is a non-toxic and non-hazardous substance found in many types of cosmetics and food additives.
Put simply, when ecotio2® Nano Titanium Dioxide Coating coated surfaces are exposed to light they decompose smog, pollution and stain causing contaminants into harmless by-products.

Light energised titanium dioxide attracts water and oxygen in the air and splits this to form two powerful oxidising species (hydroxyl radical OH-  and Oxygen Hole O2-). Its Super hydrophilic characteristic means water is very strongly attracted to the titanium dioxide surface where it is split by the energised titanium dioxide. This results in a vastly reduced contact angle of water as it hugs the surface, not allowing droplets to form.

ecotio2® The oxidation process

Surfaces coated with the ecotio2® high performance range of products will upon direct contact with viruses, bacteria and microbes, perforate the cell membrane destroying the organism at an atomic level.
This process, utilising ecotio2 active ultra-catalysts, combining the oxidization-reduction reaction and the anti-oxidant action results in active oxygen scavenging and the degradation, inactivation and removal of harmful and hazardous substances.
